Scuba Diving, Chef Kareems & Free Punch
In the morning we went scuba diving with dive school ‘Frenchies’. We just did the local reef but because of the storm the day before the surge was really bad. We actual joined the dive with another guy who was doing his open water course, so it was a bit nerve racking especially when we had to split up to descend because of the waves.
The fish were okay but the reef was super average. Lots of hard corals and very brown. The instructor did a few exercises with the other guy while we swam around.Went diving with Frenchies. Did the local reef. Fish were OK, reef was average. Good formations but lots of hard corals and very brown. The instructor was good and the gear was good, but conditions were not great. It cost 200 BZD compared to 280 BZD that the other dive school on the island were asking.
After diving we went to the BBQ right outside called Chef Kareems for BBQ chicken, it was amazing.
In the afternoon we bummed around the hostel, booked flight over the blue hole, walked around, bought a fry jack from near BDS – surprisingly good for 3 BZD (ham and cheese). Got an ice coffee from Ice and beans (unfortunately French restaurant not open) – was decent but not as good as the sample we had from the French place (closed Sundays and Monday mornings).
We had our last dinner at wish willys – don’t know what the hype was about, still cost 20 for our meals and was very average.
We got hammered on free rum punch – played pool, tic-tac-toe, jenga, beerpong, table tennis. Went for a walk downtown after 12 when hostel closed bar. All other bars closed so headed back to hostel and drank on the balcony until 2:30.
We woke up early and went to check our flight over the blue hole, turns out it was cancelled as one of the ladies didn’t want to go anymore. Cost is 175USD p/p and need 3 or 5 people.
We were going to do SUP mangrove tour with Contour for 120ish BZD but didn’t want to get sandy and salty without taking a shower for night bus so we didn’t do anything all day. Instead we relaxed in room for a while and had a short nap. We then sat in the hammocks then went to lunch.
This time we went to another BBQ near frenchies, but it was called Otis and paulas – pork chop was delicious as was BBQ chicken. Would rate up with chef kareems (probably a bit better than kareem).
To pass the time we played some pool and volleyball at the hostel, then walked around for a bit, got mini donuts and ice and beans, saw the puppies getting washed at the rescue shelter.
We went to pier early for ferry and sat around for 45 min. After we arrived in Belize city we got a taxi from the pier with the water taxi guys, 10 mins to bus terminal. We then bought a ticket from ADO stall inside near the gates. We sat around eating shitty bus terminal food for 2.5 hours and talking to randoms. It didn’t look as bad outside as people said but we didn’t bother exploring. Supposedly there was a really good jerk chicken place just up from the bus port which we missed out on.
We got on the bus at about 7 and arrived at immigration at 10:30pm, relatively painless. You can pay in USD. It’s 37.5 BZD to leave country. We arrived at 12:00 to Bacalar to pay rest of ADO ticket.
NOTE: The Guy in shop next to ADO in Belize City would change your BZD (at a shit rate – 5:1) if you bought something. Got a 25MXN torta for 4BZD+5MXN – actually was pretty decent. Bus ticket was meant to be 558 but ended up only paying 500.
